The post of Solicitor General (SG), the country's second-highest law officer, fell vacant on Friday following a surprise decision by incumbent Ranjit Kumar to step down.

A source said Kumar, who took over as solicitor general in June 2014 after the Narendra Modi government came to power, on Friday sent his resignation letter to the Ministry of Law and Justice. In a letter addressed to Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, Kumar cited "personal" grounds behind his decision to resign.

While confirming his resignation, Mr Kumar told this newspaper that due to his busy schedule and responsibilities as solicitor-general, he was not able to attend to certain health issues faced by members of his family.

After the formation of NDA government under the leadership of Narendra Modi in the center, Ranjit Kumar was appointed as a solicitor general for three years in June 2014.

The channel reported that the Additional Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta is now the front-runner for the post as he has already been leading the arguments in many cases with great political implications.

Kumar confirmed his resignation to the Indian Express.

Kumar had earlier represented the Gujarat government.

Considered an expert in Constitutional laws, service matters, and taxation, Kumar was previously a counsel for Gujarat and was also appointed as an amicus curiae in several cases in the Supreme Court.
