Following on previous reports that Intel partnered with long-time rival AMD to integrate Radeon graphics straight into the next generation of Intel mobile CPU's, the iconic chip maker has announced that beyond this partnership, it has moved to target the high-end discrete GPU space as well. Raja Koduri, who until this week had served as AMD senior VP and chief architect of the Radeon Technologies graphics division, is now taking up the same position at Intel. Considering almost all of Intel's mainstream processors include some form of integrated graphics, it would be awesome to see Intel put additional resources into competing with Nvidia and AMD GPUs. Sources close to the related companies have informed me that Raja Koduri will be landing a role at Intel soon - and this will be announced in a few days time. 'I am incredibly excited to join the Intel team and have the opportunity to drive a unified architecture vision across its world-leading IP portfolio that helps accelerate the data revolution. Still, in a market that has been dominated by just two players for quite some time, and truthfully until this year it's really just been Nvidia. The hiring and focussing of Intel's efforts in such a way will likely pay better dividends than its current scattergun approach with products like Xeon Phi, Movidius, Nervana, and so on.

There have been rumours, beginning with a forum post earlier this year by HardOCP's Kyle Bennet, that claimed AMD is developing GPUs for Intel. So to rebalance its competitive position, Intel has invested in acquiring AMD's talent, not just its designs.

The new 8th-gen chip, which Intel claims reduces the usual silicon footprint to less than half that of standard discrete components on a motherboard, will feature a "semi-custom" graphics processor from AMD.

Billions of users today enjoy computing experiences powered by Intels leading cores and visual computing IP. The company has no presence in the mid-range or high-end market of iGPUs, notes AnandTech.

Meanwhile, in perhaps the only news that can outshine the fact that Raja Koduri is joining Intel, is what he will be doing for Intel. And, with Raja heading the Core and Visual Computing Group, "we will add to our portfolio of unmatched capabilities, advance our strategy to lead in computing and graphics, and ultimately be the driving force of the data revolution".

Koduri's track record is a fine one, having previously worked at Apple between 2009 and 2013, helping to realize the company's transition to Retina displays on Mac computers.
