Speaking with Bloomberg, EA chief Andrew Wilson hinted that EA might drop the yearly release development cycle for titles like FIFA, Madden NHL, and National Football League in favor of a game as a service model meaning instead of a yearly new release, players can pay a subscription fee to receive new content and upgrades.

During an interview with Bloomberg this week, Wilson spoke briefly about a future that doesn't involve annual releases for games like Federation Internationale de Football Association or Madden. There's a few different things that have got to happen first. There's a lot of code that we make available as part of the new iteration.

Even casual gamers likely have noticed the industry's shift away from physical releases and toward digital releases in recent years. Whether a football or soccer or basketball franchise, you could rely on getting a new release for your favorite sport's franchise every year around the same time. While much of that is in relation to non-game apps like Spotify or dating services, Wilson says that the EA is looking at apps like that for ways to evolve beyond the free-to-play model largely embraced by mobile games into something more subscription-like for games on the platform as well.

In a new interview with Bloomberg, Wilson talks about the possibility of making EA's sports games a little more long-lasting.

"There, every four years we release a new big code drop, and we offer incremental change over time". Wilson compared the new subscription model like a "365-day, live service". New titles are added about six months after their initial release.

Wilson was also asked why there's now no service yet that's considered as the "Netflix of gaming".

"When we design a game that lives in a true streaming world, we have to think about screen size and session time", he said. "How does that manifest on your 60-inch TV, an hour at a time".

"The greatest disrupter to the consumption of entertainment media in the last five years has been the combination of streaming plus subscription", Wilson said. "It's changed the way we watch television".
