  • New Volvo XC60 is the SAFEST car of 2017 in latest Euro NCAP tests

And now its baby brother - the new Volvo XC60 - has done the same.

The new Volvo XC60 SUV has scored the best overall safety rating of any vehicle in 2017 after achieving the full five stars in Euro NCAP crash tests.

"In the full-width rigid-barrier test, protection of both dummies was good except for the chest of the rear passenger, protection of which was rated as marginal".

The XC60 scored a five-star rating - like the other eight vehicles tested in the latest batch of results - but finished with the highest average scores across the categories.

With an almost-perfect 98 percent in adult occupant protection and the highest all-round score of 2017 so far, it matched the performance of its bigger XC90 sibling.

'Of course, it is great to see the likes of Volvo producing cars that get nearly full marks in some areas of our tests and it demonstrates why Euro NCAP has to keep adapting its requirements, ' Michel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP secretary general said.

It scored an impressive 98 per cent, or 37.25 out of 38, for adult occupant protection, including flawless scores in the side-impact and pole categories.

It also achieved 76% in "Pedestrian protection" and 59% in the area for assistance systems. Check out the cool slow-mo crash test footage below for more. Similarly all areas except for the driver's lower legs get a "good" rating, with leg protection one step lower, considered "acceptable".

ANCAP's result comes from data collected by Euro NCAP and applies to D4, D5, T5, and T6 four cylinder variants with the plug-in hybrid T8 unrated.

The pedestrian protection element of the AEB system received a maximum score (six out of six).
