Did John Lewis ruin their own Christmas ad surprise?

  • John Lewis Christmas advert 2017'leaked: The viral video is called The Fox and the Mouse

It's all rather academic as these ads have become a United Kingdom institution and, once again, adam&eveDDB delivers for John Lewis.

Well here's a fun fact for you, it's actually two boys - twin brothers playing Joe, the little lad afraid of the dark. The soundtrack is The Beatles' Golden Slumbers sung by Elbow.

But at the very end of the clip, Joe switches off the light - which projects stars around his bedroom - and the monster can be heard under the bed again. The song was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Michel Gondry and the song did all the work for us.

The ad is screening on johnlewis.com, the retailer's YouTube channel and in stores from 8am on Friday, and will later appear on terrestrial television from around 9.30pm on Channel 4 and on all Sky's own channels.

To standard I think, rather than setting a new one. 90, 60 and 20-second versions of the ad will also played across commercial networks.

Spin-off Moz merchandise will be available at the John Lewis department stores.

Reaction to the ad has been split, with some warming to Moz the Monster, while others lamenting the retailer's choice, saying they "lost their magic touch".

Craig Inglis, John Lewis's Customer Director, added: "This year's Christmas campaign brings to life the power of children's imaginations and the joy of great friendships".

The pair then become friends, but the lack of sleep due to Moz's disturbance causes Joe to struggle to stay awake during the day.

Spending on ads has surged by 37% since 2010 amid increased competition among businesses to win over British consumers in the final quarter of the year.
