  • EA to acquire Titanfall developer Respawn

The big news of the day for Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment is certainly that they are being acquired by EA.

According to Kotaku's sources, EA outbid the South Korean publisher Nexon, which now publishes the Titanfall mobile game.

Earlier this week, one source with access to some of Respawn's forthcoming plans sent us what they said was a version of the acquisition contract, which reveals that EA is paying over $US400 ($521) million for the Los Angeles-based studio.

EA will pay $151M in cash and up to $164M in long-term equity via restricted stock, along with some variable cash consideration (limited to another $140M) tied to performance milestones through the end of 2022. The two former Infinity Ward heads were infamously fired and sued by Activision in 2010 before forming Respawn Entertainment.

Respawn CEO Vince Zameplla told GamesBeat in an interview, "We have worked together a long time from the inception of the studio".

"While it wasn't necessary, going with EA made a lot of sense", Zampella said. But it appears to have bounced back from its slow start, and EA's announcement confirms that Respawn is working on "a new title in the Titanfall universe".

Accompanying this news is the revelation that Respawn seems to already be at work on three different projects for EA. "This is a great next step for Respawn, EA, and our players".

The publisher noted that both Titanfall games to date are among the highest rated video games of the past five years; you may recall poor old Titanfall 2 was lost in the noise a bit at release last year thanks to sharing a lunch with Call of Duty WW2, among other big titles, but it wowed critics and has plenty of fervent fans. It doesn't change the future of Titanfall.

Respawn will join EA's Worldwide Studios organization, a global creative collective of leading game development studios bringing to life an unmatched portfolio of top games and services across all major platforms.
