  • Nintendo exec Failed Wii U is responsible for Switch's success

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that to accommodate for this momentum, Nintendo is increasing their Switch production to "around 25 to 30 million units" for the upcoming fiscal year, which kicks off in April 2018. "They said the plan is still in its early stages and Nintendo could aim higher depending on sales during this year's holiday season".

From the day the Switch launched on March 3rd up through the end of September, Nintendo sold 7.6 million Switch consoles worldwide.

One of the aspects that apparently caught Nintendo off guard was the system being seen by many as a handheld device over a home console, which took it from a one-per-household prospect to a device that multiple individuals in a home might want their own of. The Nintendo Switch released in March, and since then has made an impressive name for itself with titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2, and Super Mario Odyssey. Combined with sales from its launch month in March, that will bring it to a total of almost 17 million units in its 13 months of availability.

The goal was never about beating the Wii U's sales, however, as that is a low bar. In both Japan and North America, stock for the Switch always sells out.

A new report reveals that Nintendo is planning a significant increase in Switch production for 2018.

The company's also increased its expectations for this fiscal year's sales. To put this into perspective, the Wii U sold 13.5 million units worldwide before it was discontinued.
