  • No. 17 Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech: 3 keys for the Hokies

Not only because the Yellow Jackets came up with a 28-22 upset victory over No. 17 Virginia Tech for their fifth win of the season, which got them one step closer to bowl eligibility. Junior receiver Brad Stewart got behind the defense and Marshall didn't miss him as the two hooked up for a 60-yard touchdown.

Marshall also ran for two touchdowns, as Georgia Tech rolled to 261 yards on the ground against the Hokies (7-3, 3-3 ACC), who had given up 135.7 rushing yards a game coming in.

The Hokies (7-3, 3-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) went ahead 22-21 when Greg Stroman returned an interception 24 yards for a touchdown off a bad pass by Marshall with 7:27 left.

On its final possession, Virginia Tech converted a pair of fourth-down plays and faced third-and-1 at the Georgia Tech 32 with plenty of time to deal the home team another tough loss. Quarterback Josh Jackson completed 14 of 26 passes for just 153 yards.

2 No big plays: The triple-option offense grinds out yards with a punishing running style. Marshall capped the drive off six plays later with a touchdown and the lead was 14-3.

Johnson's "great" play-calling started on the first play of the game.

Jalen Holston of the Virginia Tech is tackled. Marshall finished 2-8 for 140 yards and two touchdowns.

When the Hokies have it, they need to take advantage. After a pass interference penalty, the Hokies scored on a 14-yard run by freshman Sean Savoy, who ranged far to the right, reversed his field and outran the Georgia Tech defenders to the end zone.

Another failed two-point conversation left the score there with 7:27 remaining. Georgia Tech has allowed seven kickoff returns or 38 yards or longer. Up next: Georgia Tech is on the road at Duke on Saturday.
