The report released Thursday by public advocacy group U.S. PIRG found Fidget Wild Premium spinners - in both brass and metal - contained lead levels ranging from 520 parts per million (ppm) to 33,000 ppm.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that any amount of lead in a child's blood is unsafe.

On Friday, however, Target changed course. She tests consumer products that concerned parents send to her, including hundreds of fidget spinners.

Fidget spinners are categorized as "general use" products rather than children's toys, so they are not subject to the lead limits normally applied to children's toys and overseen by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

A Target spokesperson responded to the story by writing in an email to PIRG that the fidget spinners in question are marketed to anyone age 14 or older. "So, Target needs to immediately stop selling the toys that contain high amounts of lead, and issue a recall for those that they've already sold".

Cook-Schulz said that the consumer group was pleased to learn that the fidget spinners will no longer be sold by Target.

"Target is committed to providing high quality and safe products to our guests, and we closely review all product safety claims that are brought to our attention".

USA Today said the company could not provide an estimate on how numerous popular fidget spinner toys it will have to remove from stores. "As a result", the spokesperson wrote, "the fidget spinners identified are not regulated as toys or children's products and are not required to meet children's product standards".

Notably, US PIRG continues to test spinners sold at other stores around the country. "We can't sit idly by while children play with these toxic toys".

Always use the cable that came with the fidget spinner.

In determining if they are for children or not, the CPSC looks at "whether the product and packaging designs are primarily meant to appeal to a child 12 years of age and younger and the product's age grading".

Interim CPSC Chairwoman Anne Marie Buerkle also warned that light-up spinners contain lithium coin batteries that can cause severe internal burns, if swallowed, and have been the source of fire warnings.
