Indian students accounted for 17.3% of the total foreign students in the USA in 2016-17, contributing over $6 billion to the American economy, according to the 2017 Open Doors data released by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in collaboration with the U.S. department of state's bureau of educational and cultural affairs. The state's fall 2015 enrollment was a 5.6 percent increase from the prior year.

The largest enrollment growth was from worldwide students who have graduated but remain classified as students at universities with student visas while working under the optional practical training program.
The survey offers only a preview of this year's trends and was released alongside the institute's annual "Open Doors" report, which tracks global students at 3,000 US schools but lags a year behind. "There's a lot that institutions and others can be doing to still turn this around".
Governments in Brazil and Saudi Arabia, for example, have slashed national programs that helped students study overseas in recent years, fueling a combined 23-per cent drop in students from those countries last year. He cited increased costs to attend US colleges; competition from schools in other countries, especially the U.K., Canada, Australia and Germany; visa delays or denials in visas; as well as the social and political climate in the USA may play a part in fewer enrollments.
"Through study overseas, our students are developing global mindsets that reflect intercultural curiosity, understanding and empathy, and the impact they can have on the greater good in the world", said Taylor.
However, only 20 percent of institutions indicate that some of their foreign students have expressed the desire to leave or have left the U.S.as a result of the current climate.
