12% increase in Indians studying in the USA in 2017

  • The University of San Diego has earned the No. 2 national ranking among the Top 40 doctorate-granting universities part of IIE's Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange

Indian students accounted for 17.3% of the total foreign students in the USA in 2016-17, contributing over $6 billion to the American economy, according to the 2017 Open Doors data released by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in collaboration with the U.S. department of state's bureau of educational and cultural affairs. The state's fall 2015 enrollment was a 5.6 percent increase from the prior year.

India is the second leading place of origin for students coming to the United States, comprising 17.3 per cent of the total worldwide students in the USA, it said.

The report shows that 325,339 American students received academic credit last year at the home campus for study overseas in 2015/2016, an increase of four percent from the previous year.

The top places of origin for global students studying in the U.S. were China, India, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Vietnam, Taiwan, Japan, Mexico, and Brazil.

The University of Cincinnati ranked second in the state with 4,013 foreign students.

The White House's proposed travel bans and separate reports of violence against immigrants had fueled fears of a sharp decline in students coming from overseas. The number of American students studying overseas has more than tripled in the past two decades; however, the rate of growth had slowed following the financial crisis in 2008, the report said.

USA colleges seek foreign students to bolster enrollment and their budgets, for those students generally pay full tuition and fees.

According to the report, American colleges and universities hosted more than one million worldwide students for two years in a row in 2016-2017, reaching a record high of 1.08m. About a third of worldwide students in the USA hail from China, and almost 200,000 come from India.

The largest enrollment growth was from worldwide students who have graduated but remain classified as students at universities with student visas while working under the optional practical training program.

The survey offers only a preview of this year's trends and was released alongside the institute's annual "Open Doors" report, which tracks global students at 3,000 US schools but lags a year behind. "There's a lot that institutions and others can be doing to still turn this around".

Governments in Brazil and Saudi Arabia, for example, have slashed national programs that helped students study overseas in recent years, fueling a combined 23-per cent drop in students from those countries last year. The colleges reported an average decrease of 7 percent of new students but 45 percent of schools reported declines while 31 percent reported increases.

He cited increased costs to attend US colleges; competition from schools in other countries, especially the U.K., Canada, Australia and Germany; visa delays or denials in visas; as well as the social and political climate in the USA may play a part in fewer enrollments.

"Through study overseas, our students are developing global mindsets that reflect intercultural curiosity, understanding and empathy, and the impact they can have on the greater good in the world", said Taylor.

However, only 20 percent of institutions indicate that some of their foreign students have expressed the desire to leave or have left the U.S.as a result of the current climate.

"International student exchange is an essential contributor to America's economic competitiveness and national security".
