In a new find, scientists have discovered an incredibly unique and mysterious shark species whose lineage dates all the way back to prehistoric times.

The rare frilled shark was caught aboard a trawler, which was coincidentally working on a project for the European Union which concentrates on "minimising unwanted catches in commercial fishing".

Researchers from Portugal's national meteorological, seismic, sea and atmospheric organisation, IPMA, said it was a "true living fossil", because its remains had been unchanged for 80 million years, according to BBC News' translation of a Sic Noticias report.

The scientists named this creature as "Chlamydoselachus anguineus" for its gills that are of the frilled arrangement of 300 teeth, lined neatly in 25 rows. The gills of the shark has frilly, fluffy edges, but the cuddly factor ends abruptly there. It is rarely caught because it lives at great depths.

Its jaw has more than 300 teeth neatly lined in 25 rows, which, according to professor Margarida Castro of the University of the Algarve, are specifically created to help it "to trap squid, fish and other sharks in sudden lunges", The Portugal News reported.

The reason people are not much aware about this freakish creature is because of its rare contact with human as it lives deep down the oceans, off the coasts of Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Another study of a Suruga Bay inhabitant showed that frilled sharks may also have the longest gestation period of any living creature, 42 months. The largest the frilled shark can grow is up to six feet long that is the size of a tall man.

However, the team unknowingly unearthed one of the rarest and most ancient animals on the planet.
