His forehand wavered at times as Cilic cleverly tried to take the pace off the ball with some floaty slices, but Zverev closed out the first set with an ace.

World number one Rafael Nadal has hinted that he could withdraw from the ATP World Tour Finals because of a troubled knee. He held to love three times in a row at the back end of the set but by then the damage had been done.

The Swiss star has triumphed at the season ending event, which features the top eight men's players, on six previous occasions. There's no more turning back.

But the 26-year-old had just missed out on the opportunity in 2014 and he has finally sealed it this year thanks to his title run in Cincinnati, and semi-final showing at the Australian Open.

That massive result against one of modern greats at the 2017 Italian Open gave the clearest indication as to just how much ability this German has with a racket.

Murray and Djokovic were joined on the sidelines for the majority of the season by Kei Nishikori, Milos Raonic and three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka - all of whom ended 2016 in the world's top-five.

The ATP Finals found a new crowd favourite on Sunday night when Alex Zverev produced a fine comeback to beat Marin Cilic.

The 26-year-old hit the ground running in 2017, beating three top ten players on the way to winning the Brisbane International - This was Dimitrov's first ATP in almost three years.

For Zverev, he is the youngest of the group and at 20-years-old, is the youngest to qualify for the ATP Finals since Juan Martin del Potro in 2008. Dimitrov, who also won his first Masters title in Cincinnati, will be confident he can cause a major upset.

We've played some good matches - on clay in Madrid for example.

The last time a first-timer made it out of the group stage on his debut was Kei Nishikori in 2014. "It will be interesting but we hope he plays well", said the Swiss. The Belgian secured his first ATP tour title in three years with victory over Alexandr Dolgopolov at the Shenzhen Open.

The world No. 2's face had a pained look during the match when he netted with most of the court open and his opponent - having all but given the point up - bent over and facing the other way at the net.
