Dream Chaser looks a lot like a miniature version of a NASA space shuttle.
Sierra Nevada Corp (SNC) revealed its spacecraft underwent a free-flight test, launching from a helicopter and landing at the Edwards Air Force Base in California's Mojave Desert.
Yesterday, November 12, in the US private Corporation Sierra Nevada told the public about the successful completion of the tests reusable spaceship Dream Chaser. The company said several hours after the test that the glide flight was a success, and would release more details November 13.
According to Nasa, the flight test "helped advance the vehicle under Nasa's Commercial Crew Program space act agreement, as well as helped prepare the vehicle for service under Nasa's Commercial Resupply Services 2 program". The vehicle flew a similar glide flight in October 2013, which the company and NASA considered successful despite a landing gear failure that caused the vehicle to skid off the runway after landing.
The testing showcased the Dream Chaser's aerodynamic properties as well as flight software and control system performance.
Dream Chaser is aiming to deliver cargo to the ISS beginning in 2019 and will fly six cargo service missions to and from the space station until 2024. Sierra Nevada was picked for that round, along with SpaceX and Orbital ATK again. The company also has a contract with the United Nations to launch payloads into orbit on the Dream Chaser.
Dream Chaser is a space apparatus which can be used many times.
The design of The device is based on the project of the HL-20, which in the 1990s years were developed by NASA. Future orbital vehicles will launch on Atlas V rockets from United Launch Alliance, and Lockheed Martin has partnered with Sierra Nevada to develop the composite structural shell of the orbital-class vehicles.
