THE FATHER of eight-year-old Anita Board - critically injured yesterday when her dragster crashed at the Perth Motorplex - has thanked people for their love and support.

Police have confirmed that Perth girl Anita Board has passed away in hospital following her horrific crash.

"Our baby girl is getting the best of care", he said.

The impact of the crash was so great, paramedics on scene had to revive Anita before rushing her to Rockingham Hospital.

The police statement said police will prepare a report for the coroner.

The young girl lost control of her vehicle at the end of her solo run and crashed into a cement barrier.

A young girl has died after sustaining life-threatening injuries, after she lost control of her drag-racing auto and crashed into a cement barrier during a test run at Perth Motorplex on Saturday.

Speaking earlier on Sunday, a WA Police spokeswoman said Mandurah detectives were investigating the accident.

Anita was listed on a Motorplex program of events as an entrant in the Goldenstates championships, driving a 210cc dragster.

It is understood she was not actually competing in the event but practising for her licence.

Racing was suspended for several hours at the venue in Kwinana Beach after the crash, before the track was eventually reopened about 5:00pm.

Mike Sprlyan, of Junior Dragster Australia, told Perth Now it was not unusual for an eight-year-old to get behind the wheel of what is referred to as a "tin pot", a beginners machine that can reach top speeds of 40-50km/h.

He said competitors in junior races ranged in age from 8 to 17 and were placed in three classes depending on experience.

Those who witnessed the incident comfort each other outside Princess Margaret Hospital.
