  • On these stretches safety seems light years away

"We can not ignore the pollution", the Supreme Court bench said, adding that it will hear the plea today itself after finishing the matters listed on its board.

"We can only do this much, and now we will have to wait for rains to clean the atmosphere, " said Prashant Gargava, an official at the Central Pollution Control Board.

Meanwhile, the National Green Tribunal slammed the Delhi government over a review petition on the Odd-Even scheme and asked whether the statement was just for media or the cabinet plans to move the applications.

The Delhi government, which was unhappy with the tribunal's direction of "no exemption", called off the implementation of Odd-Even rule, which was supposed to be starting from Monday, and said that they will approach the green body against seeking the expectations should stay. The review petition co-incided with the re-opening of schools in the city amid hazardous levels of air pollution. Resorting to the odd-even scheme as a stop-gap arrangement will only work to disillusion the public from its marginal efficacy.

He also warned that though the current situation will be tackled somehow, but the Delhi government should take up solid long-term comprehensive measures, otherwise Delhi will be forced to face such a crisis again.

Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Manoj Tiwari also attacking the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that "Kejriwal government completely failed in taking preventive steps against pollution, and it has taken immature steps to deal with the crisis".

According to a report in The Times of India, more than 32 lakhs people commute by bus everyday.

"In case, the women drivers are not included in the exempted list, there may be a likelihood that such women passengers do not find themselves comfortable while travelling in heavily crowded public transport buses". Adding another wave of commuters may result in collapse of public transportation system.

"In light of the two conditions by NGT on two-wheelers and women, at the moment we are calling it off".

Speaking to Firstpost regarding the matter, AAP MLA Anil Bajpai said, "We can not compromise on the issue of women's safety".

But the NGT rebuked the government while questioning the impact of the odd-even scheme on air pollution.

Meanwhile, different political parties are lashing out at the Aam Aadmi party for not being able to curb the critical health emergency in the national capital.

"The implementation of the scheme will cause great hardship to two-wheeler owners".

Thus, the AAP government, which was supposed to implement the scheme by allowing vehicles with registration number ending with an even number on roads on even dates while those ending with an odd number on odd dates beginning from Monday to Friday (November 13-November 17) for a period of five days, has made a decision to cancel its plan for the time being. Other state governments would do well to learn from AAP's example.
