Pinarayi to decide on seeking Thomas Chandy's resignation

Transport Minister Thomas Chandy has claimed that the LDF meeting, held at the AKG Centre in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, did not demanded his resignation and blamed the media for misleading reports.

"The collector is working for someone else and her report is dubious in nature", Thomas alleged. Chandy, who belongs to the NCP, became a minister eight months ago, following the resignation of A K Saseendran from the State cabinet over the issue of a sleaze talk with a woman.

The CPI leaders felt that the Minister, who moved High Court against Alappuzha Collector's report against him on encroachment, is undesirable giving a message that the Minister is moving against a Government report.

"The matter related to Chandy was discussed in detail and the general opinion was that he should resign", a senior LDF leader, who attended the meeting, told PTI.

Chandy, the lone NCP face in the cabinet, is in a spot over alleged encroachment of a lake and violation of wetland rules for construction of facilities for his resort in the backwaters of Alappuzha.

The meeting which turned to be a verbal spat between NCP and other party representatives, LDF left the decision to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to take final call on the fate of the tainted minister. "There is no situation that warranted Chandy's resignation", said NCP's State president TP Peethambaran on Saturday.

This will be crucial for Thomas Chandy because if the high court makes any negative remarks against the minister, that would well be the last nail in the coffin. "The sooner the Chief Minister acts, the better", said a Kochi-based former CPI (M) theorist.

Mr Chandy told reporters at Nedumbaserry airport later in the day that the meeting only entrusted the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to take a decision. He said the allegations were levelled only to target him "with the set agenda orchestrated" by his political rivals, interested parties, and the media conjointly.

The petition is expected to come up before the court for hearing on Wednesday.

Mr Rajasekharan also said that the UDF did not have any right to demand Chandy's resignation as they had allowed him to encroach on the land in Alappuzha.
