Common infections are developing resistance to antibiotics, health crisis looming

"Students at BYU-Idaho are partly involved in solving this antibiotic crisis by searching for new antibiotics in the soil around campus", Kelson said.

This week is the World Health Organisation (WHO)'s World Antibiotics Awareness Week which aims to raise awareness of the problem.

The Ministry of Health says antibiotics are a valuable and powerful tool in keeping people well, but inappropriate use is causing a growth in antimicrobial resistance.

For years, FDA, USDA, and various industry stakeholders have sought to tackle public health concerns associated with the use of medically important antibiotics to promote growth or feed efficiency in food-producing animals.

"It's partly about explaining to patients why antibiotics won't help".

Dr Katie Laird, Head of the IDRG and Senior Lecturer in Microbiology, said: "The issues surrounding antibiotic resistance is of paramount importance and the IDRGs overall aim is to conduct research that focuses on this issue and has an impact on people's lives".

Dr John Wyeth from PHARMAC says they are charged with getting the best possible health outcomes for New Zealanders from the public medicines budget - and antimicrobial resistance could undermine that. This plan provides a roadmap to identify instances of antibiotic resistance, stop the spread of resistance, and improve the prescribing and use of antibiotics.

Chris Little is the infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship pharmacist at Capital Coast District Health Board. People can hand in their unused or out of date antibiotics at any of the Trust's Lloyds outpatient pharmacies based at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, Charing Cross Hospital in Hammersmith and Hammersmith Hospital in Acton, until Wednesday 1 December. "We have to be able to use the right antibiotics, right time, right dose, for those patients".

"Nurses have an integral part to play". WHO also recommends that sick animals should be tested to determine the most effective and prudent antibiotic to treat a specific infection and the antibiotics used should be selected from those listed by WHO as "least important" to human health.

The WHO said their guidelines contribute directly to the aims of the Global action plan on antimicrobial resistance adopted by the World Health Assembly in 2015 and the Declaration of the High-Level Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on Antimicrobial Resistance, adopted in 2016.
