GameStop "Temporarily Pauses" its PowerPass Used Game Lending Service

  • GameStop halts its unlimited used game rental program

Essentially, you could use GameStop as a type of pre-owned video game library.

There is no word when the program will be reinstated. There's no additional charge on each rental, but you can only have one game checked out at a time.

The spokesperson specified that the roll out was being paused due to "program limitations".

The subscription is only available for GameStop Power-Up Rewards members, but that's not much of a stumbling block: While there are paid tiers that offer additional benefits, there's also a free base tier. A GameStop rep since confirmed the news, telling Kotaku, "We feel this is the right thing to do for now to ensure we are able to provide our guests with an exceptional service". According to multiple employees and a spokesperson for GameStop, the heavily anticipated service has hit several snags ahead of its launch, and will now be suspended indefinitely. At the end of your 6-months, you were to be able to keep the last used game you took out.

Customers looking forward to the rollout of GameStop's new game rental program, PowerPass, will have to press pause on those plans.

That means any in-store advertisements for PowerPass have been removed and put in storage until further notice. Customers who already bought the subscription will need to return their game and their pass to get a full refund.

There is now no timeframe for when PowerPass will be reinstated, so if that was part of your holiday gift plans, you may want to find another option for the gamer in your life.

GameStop PowerPass isn't quite ready for showtime.

In a likely attempt to stem the tide of game downloads, GameStop has devoted more and more floor space in each store to physical geek culture goods like Funko Pop figurines and T-shirts. In the meantime, one alternative would be Microsoft's Game Pass program, which gives Xbox owners access to 100 Xbox One and Xbox 360 games for $10 per month.
