"I'm open minded. We watch the players very closely with their clubs and have succession plans to who is second, third and fourth choice".

Crystal Palace's on-loan Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek was England's standout performer in Friday's goalless draw against Germany, and Southgate turned to youth once again by adding Dominic Solanke, Lewis Cook and Angus Gunn to the senior side from the Under-21s. We have to see how the game progresses but I won't have any hesitation in putting them on the pitch.

For the Bournemouth star it is a validation of his decision to leave Leeds United and a continuation of an excellent year for the youngster, who captained the England under-20s to World Cup success in the summer.

He was also named as player of the tournament for the event.

Southgate appears to be using the friendlies ahead of the World Cup in order to blood young talent before making a decision on the players he will include in is squad for Russian Federation 2018.

On what England have to do to improve their record, Southgate said: "It's about being able to execute a technique under pressure". We had players who were regular penalty takers who executed their penalties brilliantly in the quarter-final and semi-final, so clearly it is the guys who aren't used to that situation that then have to have a strategy to dealing with it. One of the most frustrating aspects of England's play in recent times has been the consistent sideways passing of the side as they try to play the Dutch, Spanish or Italian way - and fail.

"It's something that we are considering and how we prepare best for penalty shoot-outs", he said.
