HTC reveals standalone Vive Focus VR headset and cancels Daydream plans

  • HTC Vive Focus is a standalone VR headset with ‘world-scale’ tracking

Unfortunately, HTC is still keeping some information close to the vest like the unit's price and when it will become available to the public. Unlike some other standalone VR headsets, you don't need your phone.

This unit aims to offer a different kind of VR solution. The other thing worth mentioning is the fact that it definitely looks quite bulk (due to the tech being inside). "The combination of Snapdragon's ultra-low power, high performance VR coupled with the new Vive Wave VR open platform will help content developers deliver best-in-class mobile VR experiences to users". The headset is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 platform and supports inside-out tracking to enable 6 DOF (degrees of freedom) tracking in real time and without additional trackers.

The goal of Vive Wave was to provide a unified interface and set of tools for developers to provide content for the HTC Vive Focus, as well as other mobile virtual reality (VR) devices. Therefore it seems likely that those companies intent to integrate Vive Wave into their hardware. Choice is great, of course, but when each device has its own content platform, it's hard for developers to support all systems, paving the way for one platform to dominate. HTC said that the no-hassle publishing system would support Viveport for PC VR and mobile VR content. The company unveiled its standalone device at an event in China this evening, explaining that its new VR device gives people the freedom to enjoy virtual reality content wherever they are.

Alongside this announcement, HTC also unleashed its new VR development platform, which will be utilised by the Focus. At its Vive dev conference in Shanghai today, HTC announced the Vive Wave platform which pairs content development with syncing hardware partners behind their Viveport content store, which HTC is hoping to unify developers behind. HTC hasn't given a lot more away about the Focus' other specs, like its screen resolution. HTC is also accepting applications for Vive Wave developer kits through the Chinese Vive developer hub.
