Almost two weeks after the Israeli army blew up a tunnel that ran between the southern Gaza Strip and Israel, killing 12 Palestinian fighters from the Islamic Jihad and Hamas movements, Israel has continued to exchange threats with the groups, saying that it will "respond with force" to any retaliation from Gaza.

Other Iron Dome batteries were also reportedly moved to central Israel from the south of the country, where they normally protect against sporadic short-range rocket attacks.

"We are aware of the plot being waged by Palestinian Islamic Jihad against Israel".

The Iron Dome system, which is created to shoot down short-range rockets and, in some cases, mortars, was deployed to counter the threats made by Islamic Jihad, which has vowed to avenge its members killed in the tunnel blast and its aftermath.

Israel and the Gaza-based militant group Islamic Jihad have recently been exchanging threats, with Islamic Jihad swearing vengeance after the Israeli army destroyed a tunnel on the edge of the Gaza Strip this month, killing 12 people including 10 militants from the group.

In a vow to respond with equal measure, Islamic Jihad urged "Israel's threats don't scare us".

Israel has said it is holding the bodies of five fighters retrieved from the tunnel, and implied it could use them as bargaining chips to retrieve the remains of two soldiers believed to be held by Hamas.

"[To] the commander of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Damascus and the leaders of the organization, Ramadan Shelah and Ziad Nakhla, quickly get your affairs in order, because it is you who will bear the responsibility".

Since 2008, Israel has launched three offensives on the Gaza Strip. Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, in an Army Radio interview on Saturday, said, "there are nonstop attacks to commit attacks in Judea and Samaria".

Despite Egyptian-led reconciliation attempts between Fatah and Hamas, recent developments demonstrate that pressure from Cairo may not be sufficient to disrupt a possible revenge attack by Islamic Jihad.

After yesterday's report that several of the IDF's Iron Dome batteries had been deployed throughout central Israel, it has been released for publication that one of the batteries has been stationed in the Tel Aviv Metropolitan Area.
