Amazon head of scripted series Sharon Tal Yguado said the conglomerate was honoured to be working with the Tolkien Estate on the collaboration.

"We are delighted that Amazon, with its long-standing commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for 'The Lord of the Rings, ' " Matt Galsor, representing the Tolkien estate and trust and HarperCollins, said in the statement.

JRR Tolkien's fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings is to be made into a new Amazon TV series with a possible spin-off show also in the mix. The forthcoming series will be produced by Amazon Studios, The Tolkien Estate, book publisher HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema - the division of Warner Bros. that produced the celebrated film trilogy, which premiered in the early aughts and went on to cinch 17 Academy Awards.

Reaction on social media was mixed.

"Amazon is committed to producing super high quality, recognized, branded entertainment", said Wedbush Securities industry analyst Michael Pachter.

Also, @mel7pass tweeted: "Wait a minute, the Lord of the Rings aren't a reboot, it's a prequel, this is so much worse than I fear. I don't see it being anywhere in between".

On Monday, e-commerce giant Amazon (AMZN - Free Report) announced that it has acquired global television rights to The Lord of the Rings (LOTR), and has big plans to bring the beloved franchise set in Middle Earth to the small screen. That lawsuit had been underway since 2012, with Warner Bros. later settling this past July for an undisclosed amount.

The three film adaptations of "The Lord of the Rings", from New Line Cinema and director Peter Jackson, earned a combined gross of almost $6 billion worldwide.

All three films got an Oscar nomination for best picture with the last film, The Return of the King, winning the gong.

He followed up with a prequel trilogy based on Tolkien's The Hobbit, which made nearly the same at the box office.
