While it has been said the new Sony Spider-Man spinoff movies are not connected to Marvel Studios, the article notes "the studio, however, is being coy as to whether or not these new movies will be connected to Sony's Tom Holland movies or connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe that is being produced by Marvel Studios".

The Hollywood Reporter broke the story about the Morbius movie, but it offered no details about the script's take on the title character. He was introduced in a 1971 issue of "The Amazing Spider-Man", the first Spider-Man comic not written by Stan Lee. Power Rangers writers Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama developed the script, which was submitted to Sony "after a secret development process". Spider-Man sees Morbius as a murderous terror willing to sacrifice morals for a cure.

If you're not familiar with the character: Morbius "The Living Vampire" is actually biochemist Michael Morbius, who tried to cure himself of a rare blood disease, but instead infected himself with a form of quasi-vampirism, which include both the power (strength, speed, flight) and weaknesses (bloodlust, aversion to light) of a vampire.

In the comics, Morbius also pals around with Doctor Strange sometimes-which will presumably never happen on the big screen, since Sony is still trying to do its own riff on the Marvel Universe.

The character was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane. No director's names were brought up in this initial report about the next Spider-Man spin-off for Sony's standalone Marvel Universe. "Over time, however, he became a slightly heroic figure in his own right".

That, I suspect, is why we're going to end up with a whole movie about Morbius, the Living Vampire. It'll start with next year's Venom, slated to star Tom Hardy, and continue with Silver & Black, focused on the Spider-Man characters Silver Sable and Black Cat. Venom is currently in production with Silver & Black on the way, and now they have a third movie in the lineup-Morbius: The Living Vampire. First and foremost, Morbius needs a good story.
