The animated Google doodle in which the letters of the word Google are made of small bits of paper that remain after hole puncher punches a sheet of paper. This is how today's Google doodle celebrates the 131st anniversary of the hole punch, a staple in offices, schools and colleges.

A couple of Years ago, Sir, Friedrich Soennecken documented an everlasting and surprising patent for the opening puncher or what shall we say a Papierlocher fur Sammelmappen that's we it's named.

There are now dozens of iterations of the hole puncher, including the common two-hole punch, the drill punch and even industrial-sized punches for putting holes in sheets of metal. Soennecken was the son of a blacksmith who founded his own company, F Soennecken Verlag, in 1875.

"Today we celebrate 131 years of the hole puncher, an understated - but essential - artifact of German engineering". Besides the hole puncher, he invented a binder and a special nib for ink pens that are used for calligraphy. The liveliness demonstrates a sheet of paper doing a little dance in the wake of being punched.

Patented by Friedrich Soennecken on November 14 1886, the hole puncher has gone down in history as one of the all time great feats of German ingenuity. The speciality of this invention is that its basic design has not changed in over 129 years. The device uses a lever and spring system to allow the user to punch holes with cylindrical blades through stacked sheets of paper with minimal force, according to the Mirror. ISO 838 is the commonly used punching machine, apart from that single-hole punchers are used for various purposes like validating tickets or marking used playing cards.

Google describes the hole puncher as an understated but essential artifact of German engineering. The hole puncher doodle reaches countries across Europe, North America, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand and India.
