  • MANILA. President Donald Trump speaks with Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte at an Asean Summit dinner at the SMX Convention Center on Nov. 12 2017 in Manila

He was closing a almost two-week trip through Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines that included one-on-one meetings with the leaders of those nations during which he stressed trade.

In Manila for the Asean conference, Trump looked to strengthen ties with Pacific Rim allies, aiming to strike one-on-one trade deals rather than multinational trade agreements, and increase pressure on North Korea to abandon its nuclear programme.

Trump and Duterte's meeting was one of the most anticipated of the East and Southeast Asian leaders' summit in Manila.

Trump is slated to meet several times with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte (doo-TEHR'-tay).

"Trump, during his visit, laid bare his true nature as destroyer of the world peace and stability and begged for a nuclear war on the Korean Peninsula", Pyongyang's foreign ministry said in a statement. He publicly advocated his "America first" policies, warning US trading partners that he was ready to take more protectionist steps in a bid to help American businesses and workers.

He met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and highlighted their two nations' "deeper and more comprehensive" ties, looking to strengthen a relationship that is vital to the USA vision of an Indo-Pacific region that attempts to de-emphasise China's influence. "We are an important ally", Duterte told Trump at the beginning of their talks, according to reporters allowed in to the meeting room.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull on the sidelines of ASEAN Summit in Philippines' Manila on Tuesday. "And I'm really proud of that".

The White House said the two leaders discussed the Islamic State group, illegal drugs and trade. The White House has suggested the president may designate North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism. Trump, by contrast, said on Monday he had a "great relationship" with Duterte.

A joint statement after the meeting said the two sides "underscored that human rights and the dignity of human life are essential, and agreed to continue mainstreaming the human rights agenda in their national programs".

Mr. Duterte's actions have alarmed human rights advocates, who say as many as 9,000 people have been killed in the crackdown on drug trafficking.
