News of an upcoming Lord of the Rings TV series has been confirmed, exciting all "Ringers" and "Tolkeinheads" around the world.

Amazon is planning a "Lord of the Rings" TV series, but although J.R.R. Tolkien fans are probably rejoicing, it could be a risk for the corporate goliath. Amazon said the series would be available via the Prime Video app or online in more than 200 countries and territories, but it did not announce a release date.

The once rumored Lord of the Rings TV series is said to be a part of the strategy shift Jeff Bezos orchestrated to produce a show that will be in the same league as Game of Thrones.

With its fantastical setting and characters, The Lord Of The Rings bears a superficial resemblance to HBO's Game Of Thrones, now one of the biggest shows in the world.

The move also comes four months after the Tolkien estate and Warner Bros - the parent company of New Line Cinema - settled an US$80-million lawsuit.

Amazon Studios will be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust to resurrect the franchise that Peter Jackson magnificently brought to life in the early 00's in the form of a movie trilogy that set the standard for Hollywood blockbusters.

This is the first time Tolkein's masterpiece will have a television series adaptation. "We ... are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth". The distribution juggernaut paid close to $250 million just to acquire the rights to the show-that's before any production costs at all, including talent, equipment, development, and production.
