Canalys: Apple, Inc. Sold 3.9 Million Apple Watches Last Quarter

  • Report: Apple is back to being the world's top wearable maker

Tim Cook noted that "With unit growth of over 50% for the third consecutive quarter, it continues to be the best selling and most loved smartwatch in the world".

For the third quarter of 2017, Apple was once again the leader of the wearable market.

China's Xiaomi, which was the No. 1 vendor in the second quarter, fell to the No. 2 spot with 3.6 million units, while Fitbit (NYSE: FIT) came in at No. 3 with 3.5 million units shipped. The launch of Apple Watch Series 3 is one major reason for Apple's stellar performance in the third-quarter. Compared to their most recent flagship smartphones, sales figures correspond to approximately one smartwatch sold for every seven iPhone 7/8-series models at Apple, one smartwatch sold for every 14 flagship P and Mate smartphones for Huawei, and one smartwatch sold for every 23 flagship Galaxy smartphones for Samsung.

Grateful for his new Apple Watch 3 functionality that took him out of a potentially risky situation, John Zilles emailed Apple to let them know how he appreciates the gear, and apparently even got a short reaction by fellow fitness nerd Tim Cook himself, in the form of one short but sweet "wow, happy to hear you are safe" reply.

Despite strong shipments, the Apple Watch Series 3 did not reach its full potential in Q3. Canalys expects strong demand from Chinese customers once the issue is resolved. In most of the markets, only the Wi-Fi version of the Watch Series 3 is available. The researcher estimates that approximately 800,000 Apple Watches shipped during the quarter - about a fifth - included cellular connectivity. The Chinese government has now disabled the Apple Watch LTE access due to apparent security concerns, but the once the issue is resolved, Canalys expects strong demand from the Chinese buyers as well, according to 9to5mac. No. 400 on the Fortune 500 for 2017 was Calpine, with $6.7 billion in revenue, so we can say Apple's wearables business is at least that large and represents over half of the company's "Other Products" segment, which generated $12.9 billion in revenue in fiscal 2017.
