  • Torey Lovullo of the Arizona Diamondbacks won the Manager of the Year award in his first season on the job

Twins manager Paul Molitor and Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo have been voted Manager of the Year in their respective leagues, the Baseball Writers' Association of America announced Tuesday. Dave Roberts, a runner-up this year, was Manager of the Year as a first-time manager for the Dodgers in 2016, as was Jeff Banister for the Rangers in '15 and Matt Williams for the Nationals in '14. The Twins lost the wild card game to the Yankees. There was no sure-thing like when Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger won the Rookie of the Year awards. Craig Counsell of the Milwaukee Brewers finished fourth and Dusty Baker, who was sacked by the Washington Nationals, finished fifth. That represented a 24-game improvement over the team's record of 69-93 in 2016. The Cleveland Indians' Terry Francona, the 2016 victor, was the runner-up with 11 first-place votes. Baker, who also received six second-place votes and two thirds, was dismissed by the Nationals a little more than a week after they were eliminated in the National League Division Series. The Yankees Joe Girardi finished fourth with 12 points.

"An award like this, it's certainly a reflection of the organization [and] the work my coaches and players put in", Molitor said on MLB Network. Lovullo accumulated 111 points (18 first place votes) followed by Roberts with 55 (five first place votes) and Black 43 points (three first place votes). "Minnesota last had a Manager of the Year in 2010, when Ron Gardenhire won in the Twins" last playoff season; their other Manager of the Year was Tom Kelly in 1991.

Molitor, who was elected to the Hall of Fame as a player in 2004, is the second Hall of Famer to be named Manager of the Year.
