  • Hearing of NAB references against former PM Nawaz family adjourns till Wednesday

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday vowed to take struggle against what he said double standard of courts to logical end as he appeared before an accountability court which is hearing corruption cases against him.

Sharif along with his daughter Maryam Nawaz and her husband Muhammad Safdar left the court hours before the judge announced the verdict.

The two sought exemption on the account of the medical condition of Nawaz's wife, Kulsoom, who is undergoing treatment for lymphoma in London. Maryam stated that she would present herself in court whenever there is a hearing, however, if she has to leave the country in case of an emergency, the court should allow her representative - Jahangir Jadoon - to appear in court on her behalf.

Accountability Court Judge Muhammad Bashir is expected to rule on both these applications within a day.

As the hearing begun, prosecution witnesses Sidra Mansoor of Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan recorded her statements in connection with Avenfield Properties Reference (London Properties).

"The records that NAB has presented in court hold my signatures and thumb impressions", Mansoor said, adding that among other things the records also contained audit reports of the Sharif family's various businesses.

The counsels of Nawaz and his children, Khawaja Harris and Amjad Pervez, raised objection that the witness submitted unverified documents as they did not have company's stamp. Four witnesses have been summoned for the next hearing.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Tuesday submitted a compliance report before the Accountability Court on declaring Hussain Nawaz and Hassan Nawaz as proclaimed offenders.

The three references related to the Sharif family's London flats, Flagship Investment Ltd and Al Azizia & Hill Metal Establishment.

The plea was filed by Nawaz Sharif and his sons, Hassan and Hussain Nawaz.

Responding to a journalist's question inside the court about Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan's bail approval by the anti-terrorism court (ATC) yesterday, Nawaz said, "the courts have double standards".

Nawaz, along with Maryam and Safdar had earlier reached Islamabad from Lahore.

State Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb and Railways Minister Saad Rafique, in separate brief media talks, aired their grievances against the "justice" being meted out to the former premier.

On Nov 8, Judge Mohammad Bashir had turned down a peal filed by Sharif to club the references filed by the NAB.

The petition said the accountability court's order was based on a gross misreading of the "facts" on which it was purportedly based.
