"This should have been nipped in the bud a year and a half ago", Schnatter reportedly said during the November 1 call. "The controversy is polarizing the customer, polarizing the country".

On Nov. 1, reports emerged that Schnatter had made controversial remarks during the quarterly earnings call with Wall Street analysts, saying that the National Football League "controversy" was causing TV ratings to decline and affecting Papa John's business.

After Schnatter's comments toward the league went viral, a white supremacist website declared Papa Johns "the official pizza of the alt-right," which the company tried to distance itself from. "That definitely was not our intention", Papa John's wrote.

The pizza delivery chain noted in a series of tweets that it merely described "factors" instrumental in the earnings dip, declaring that "we sincerely apologize to anyone that thought they were divisive".

Papa John's added that they support the players' right to protest inequality, and that they believe there is a way to "create a new platform for change" and "honor our anthem" at the same time.

Last year, then-49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the performance of the anthem to protest the treatment of black Americans, particularly by police. Open to ideas from all. "Leadership starts at the top, and this is an example of poor leadership". "Except neo-nazis - expletive those guys".

Apparently Papa John's doesn't believe two weeks is too late to say sorry. "I don't see an apology for that".

It took nearly two weeks for the company to speak on the topic again, but this time, they released a series of tweets apologizing for their actions and blaming players who were peacefully protesting police brutality and social injustices during the Anthem.
