Texas State University suspends Greek activities after student dies after frat event

Following other colleges, Florida State University moved to indefinitely ban all fraternity and sorority activities until "a new normal for Greek Life at the university" is reached, according to a statement from John E. Thrasher, the university's president.

Friends found 20-year-old Matthew Ellis unresponsive at an apartment in San Marcos on Monday afternoon.
Police said they received a call around 11:35 a.m. Monday describing a person who was not breathing at the Millennium Apartments, an off-campus residential complex for students.
Emergency responders pronounced Ellis dead at 12:28 p.m. Ellis was a new member of Phi Kappa Psi.

Texas State President Denise M. Trauth said she was "deeply saddened" by Ellis' death and was suspending all fraternity and sorority activities at the school as a result.
Ellis is the second Texas State student to die since the winter of 2016 after attending an off-campus Greek event.
"My thoughts are with his family, friends, and the Texas State Community", she said.
"Charges could range from furnishing alcohol to a minor, on the high end of possibly manslaughter". In her email, Trauth stated she has suspend all activities of fraternities and sororities until a review has been completed.
Phi Kappa Psi's Texas State chapter switched its Twitter account to private following Ellis' death, ABC San Antonio affiliate KSAT reported.
