Today the United Nations General Assembly passed the truce by acclamation, continuing an Olympic tradition.

"Just as the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul contributed to the dismantling of the eastern and western camps and the Cold War era, the Government could promote peace on the Korean peninsula through the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and Paralympics, and further promote peace and cooperation on the Korean Peninsula".

The United Nations General Assembly adopted an Olympic Truce resolution ahead of the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games on Monday in NY, calling for the games to be an opportunity to promote peace on the Korean Peninsula.

The truce was passed by consensus in the General Assembly, including both North and South Korea.

Organizers of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, expect long-time adversary North Korea to hold off for as long as possible on deciding whether to participate in the Games, South Korea's top sports official said on Tuesday.

It was titled "Building a Peaceful and Better World through Sports and the Olympic Idea".

While the Olympic Truce has been a tradition since the UN General Assembly passed the first one, which went into effect during the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, Monday's resolution was drafted by the South Korean government and co-sponsored by China, the US, Japan and Russian Federation.

In his words, "Only the United Nations member states can guarantee the athletes the safe passage to the Olympic Games".

"I firmly believe that PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Games will help spread the message of peace through one of the few languages that has the power to unite people around the world, sport", Kim Yu Na said in her speech.

A record 94 countries have expressed interest in sending athletes to next year's Winter Olympics, although North Korea have yet to indicate whether they will attend the Games.

Do also said it's possible that North Korea will take part, citing that North Korean figure skaters had already qualified to compete.

"In our fragile world that is drifting apart, the Olympic Games have the power to unite humanity in all its diversity", Bach said.

North Korea did not have any athletes at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games. "In our fragile world, polarization and mistrust are growing. They never erect walls".
