Members will enjoy a host of facilities, including access to video streaming and free gaming services such as Twitch Prime.

This will largely be of interest to merchants who sell on Amazon.com, as Prime Singapore offers free 2-hour delivery on tens of thousands of items but more importantly free worldwide delivery on millions more items from Amazon US.

American e-commerce giant Amazon is launching its Prime membership programme for Singapore this week, ending a four year period of free shipping to the Republic.

Membership is available for $8.99 per month.

Amazon on Tuesday stopped free shipping options to Singapore for qualifying items over S$168 were reported to be no longer applicable, media reported.

Speaking about the launch of Amazon Prime, Jamil Ghani, vice-president of Amazon Prime International, said, "Prime membership is created to offer the best of Amazon".

However, this does mean the previously free Prime Now service is gone, and users will have to subscribe to Prime if they even want to make a purchase locally, unlike local rivals Redmart and Honestbee, which do not require a subscription to order products such as diapers or groceries.

Singapore will be the first country in Southeast Asia, and 16th globally, to launch Amazon Prime.

Today, Amazon announced the launch of Amazon Prime in Singapore. For a limited time, customers can join Prime at an introductory promotional price of S$2.99 per month ahead of the S$8.99 monthly price.

Speaking to The Straits Times, Mr Ghani acknowledged that some living in the country already have Amazon Prime memberships for the U.S. site.

"Now, with the launch of Amazon Prime, Singapore consumers can finally have access to these products and services, and can get more value when they shop on Prime Now". Since 2005, Prime has been focused on making customers' lives better every day. Though everything points to an eventual local Amazon online store, he remained mum about their plans.

He added that Prime membership is "country-specific and not-transferable" so those with United States memberships are unable to use it locally, and that he encouraged Singaporeans "to leverage the Prime membership package developed specifically for Singapore".

Amazon's offering, available in Austin, Minneapolis, New York City, Phoenix, Portland, Raleigh, San Diego, San Francisco and its hometown of Seattle, will help it win last-minute craft shoppers and the artisans eager to reach them.

Lazada, the region's largest e-commerce site, launched its own membership programme in April called LiveUp in anticipation of Amazon's entry to Singapore.
