  • SIA, Air New Zealand to launch third daily Singapore-Auckland flight from Oct 2018

Reuters reported this morning that Air New Zealand had said that "two recent events" involving Rolls-Royce's Trent 1000 engines had prompted it to cancel and delay some global flights over the coming weeks.

The airline has notified the stock exchange that there will be limited worldwide flight cancellations and delays each day over the coming weeks following problems with the aircraft engines.

Nick Judd, Air New Zealand's chief strategy, networks and alliances officer, Nick Judd, added that the extra flight would be "especially appealing to travellers to and from Europe, India and southeast Asia".

Rolls-Royce has informed Air New Zealand that some of its engines on the Boeing 787-9 fleet will require maintenance sooner than previously advised and that it does not have any spare engines available while that maintenance work is undertaken.

SIA will operate a mix of Airbus A380s and Boeing 777-300ERs, while Air New Zealand will utilise its new configuration 787-9 aircraft, offering more premium seats than its current 787-9 fleet.

While New Zealand's national carrier did not disclose the cause of the issue, the New Zealand Transport Accident Investigation Commission said it was investigating two events involving "engine abnormalities".

Under their joint venture alliance established in January 2015, both airlines will continue to operate one daily return services each on the Singapore-Auckland route, with a third service operated by SIA during the winter season and by Air New Zealand in the summer season.

The news comes after two Air New Zealand flights, heading to Tokyo and Buenos Aires respectively, were forced to return to Auckland after take off earlier this week, due to unspecified engineering issues.

Passengers affected would be contacted with new travel information, while Air NZ would update any schedule changes on its website. Delays stretch beyond seven hours.
