It was back in October, when an Oreo-based Android Wear beta was announced by Google.

As TL Lee, the General Manager at MediaTek's business unit, points out, Google's Android Oreo Go edition combined with MediaTek's optimized chipsets will be an important step in tackling "the performance challenges of lower memory phones" and in "improving the user experience of entry level smartphones for consumers in key markets across India, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and South East Asia". Google is fulfilling its promise now with the launch of Android Go, which has already started rolling out to developers and manufacturers. Google made the announcement in a blog post.

While there are no major features coming with this update, it will bring Android Go compatibility for low-end phones along with smarter apps. We don't yet know exactly when each device will be updating, but at least if you've got an Android Wear watch, at least you now know that Oreo is starting to make its way to smartwatches and that you should keep an eye out for your update. Android One follows a Nexus eco-system, where both Google and the manufacturer has the say in deciding the updates and contents of the OS.

As for MediaTek, the company's MT6739, MT6737, and MT6580 processors now all support hardware running Android Go.

You can download the factory images here or opt for OTA manual update images instead.

Android 8.1 Oreo (Go Edition): What is it?

Qualcomm says that it's now working with Google to deliver an optimized experience for smartphones that come with 1 GB or less of memory.

Android Oreo Go Edition was announced just this week and it is an optimized version of Android for device makers who wish to sell a low-end device. But Google is doing the trick by enabling the GO versions of its apps in the Android Go edition.
