  • Iraq demands U.S. backtrack on Jerusalem militia says troops a target

An Iranian-backed militia in Iraq threatened on Thursday to attack USA forces in the country in retaliation for President Donald Trump recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

"U.S. government facilities worldwide remain in a heightened state of alert", the warning read.

In a "security message" posted on the consulate's website, the USA government said it published the Israel travel warning because of "widespread calls for demonstrations" beginning Wednesday in Jerusalem and the West Bank.

The US has thousands of troops stationed in Iraq to help in the fight against IS. That advisory, which cautions that "the possibility of random violence continues to exist and can happen without warning", is still in effect. "These facilities may temporarily close or periodically suspend public services to assess their security posture".

The State Department issued a worldwide warning for American citizens overseas following President Donald Trump's announcement on Jerusalem.

He also proclaimed Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

"We caution against the unsafe repercussions of this decision on the stability of the region and the world", an Iraqi government statement said.

Jerusalem remains at the core of the Israel-Palestine conflict, with Palestinians hoping that East Jerusalem - now occupied by Israel - might eventually serve as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

While the Trump administration and Israel's prime minister framed the decision as a step toward peace, Arab leaders warned it could have disastrous consequences for regional stability.

Turkey, a US and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally, threatened to sever ties with Israel if the USA were to make such a declaration and the Palestinians said they would cut off contact with their USA government liaisons, CBS News reported.

A number of world powers, including Germany, Turkey, and Russian Federation, expressed grave concern over the Trump administration's decision.
