Saudi Prince Identified as Buyer of $450.3M Leonardo Painting "Salvator Mundi"

The newspaper confirmed that the Prince Bader purchased the rare painting after citing documents it had reviewed while in the midst of an investigation into Saudi Arabia's elite class, including his family and associates.

A Saudi Arabian prince, Bader bin Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Farhan al-Saud, has been identified by The New York Times as the buyer of the most expensive ever painting, Leonardo da Vinci's Salvator Mundi. But the Times investigation found that he certainly owns more than property. Yet it's still mind-boggling to think that the Louvre Abu Dhabi, a recently completed museum costing roughly $700 million, will soon house a painting costing $450.3 million. He now serves as chairman of the Riyadh-based Saudi Research and Marketing Group (SRMG), which publishes 15 magazines and newspapers, including the Arabic daily Asharq Al-Awsat.

The auction house said no more, and a Christie's representative declined to offer more details.

As auctioneers in NY watched on disbelief, the bidding war over Salvator Mundi far outstripped the original "conservative" estimate of $100 million.

Following the crown prince's quick rise to power, he promoted Prince Bader within the kingdom.

He and Prince Mohammed, 32, both attended King Saud University in Riyadh around the same time. The description also goes on to say Prince Bader was "active" in real estate projects in Saudi Arabia, Dubai and the Middle East for over five years.

He was appointed by Prince Mohammed as the governor of a newly formed commission to develop a tourist destination project led by Prince Mohammed.

"We are delighted that the work will again be on public view", a Christie's spokesperson said of the record-setting painting.

Prince Bader's purchase of the painting is surprising for a number of reasons, as the New York Times noted. He was represented by Alex Rotter, who was the co-chairman of postwar and contemporary art at Christie's.

The outpost of the Louvre in Abu Dhabi announced that Leonardo's Salvator Mundi, which was bought last month for $450 million, would be heading to the museum. However the identity of the buyer has remained an elusive secret with speculation now focusing on the Abu Dhabi Royals as the purchaser. By then, though, the painting's origin had been obscured due to overpainting and it was credited to da Vinci's follower Bernardino Luini.
