SC to hear plea for interim relief on mandatory linking of Aadhaar

Supreme Court lawyer Shyam Divan said that the deadline was going to expire and the petitioners should be heard for an interim relief.
The Centre on Thursday informed Supreme Court that deadline to link Aadhaar Card with various schemes will be extended till March 31, 2018.
Citizens are required to link their Aadhaar with government services, PAN cards, mobile numbers and bank accounts. The deadline set earlier by the government was December 31.
Subsequent to the Act, notifications have been issued making Aadhaar mandatory for availing various welfare benefits such as public distribution services (PDS), cooking gas LPG, MNREGS, scholarships and pensions.
Aadhaar has to be added to bank accounts, PAN cards, government services and cellphone services. Aadhaar will also be made mandatory to open bank account or to secure loans. This is because the government is complying with a February 6, 2017 order of the court in the Lok Niti Foundation case to tighten up the verification process of mobile phone users through Aadhaar linkage, on the pretext of state security, reports The Hindu (TH).
The Central government has previously made Aadhaar card mandatory for carrying out nearly all the legal tasks in the country. Aadhaar card has to be linked to PAN card on or before December 31, 2017, otherwise, the PAN card will be blocked.
There are also a number of other benefits of linking your mobile phone number with your Aadhaar.
Keep in mind, that once the Aadhaar-PAN linking is done, you can e-Verify your IT returns using Aadhaar if your mobile is registered with Aadhaar.
A nine-judge constitution bench of the apex court had held that Right to Privacy was a Fundamental Right under the Constitution.
