  • A total of eleven Toyota and Lexus vehicles are 2018 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK award winners with the new 2018 Camry receiving its highest award the TOP SAFETY PICK

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is releasing its picks for the safest cars of 2018.

Over the last decade, vehicle safety has improved dramatically as automakers recognize that safety is a big selling point.

This year, vehicles must receive a good or acceptable rating passenger-side protection in the small overlap front crash test to get the institute's highest ranking. It also required vehicles to have acceptable or good headlights for the first time to earn a Top Safety Pick award. All but one of the seven vehicles in Subaru's 2018 lineup earn one of the awards.

To qualify for either award, vehicles must earn the a good rating in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint evaluations, as well as earn an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention.

"Drivers expect that their passengers, who are often family, will be protected just as well as they are", IIHS President Adrian Lund said, according to Consumer Reports.

"We rate headlamps because when we look at how they light up the road many of them aren't doing a very good job", said Lund. It began measuring both how well low and high beams illuminated the road and the amount of glare they produce for oncoming vehicles as part of its ratings in 2016. For instance, automatic braking is a key requirement for the getting the "Top Pick Plus" rating, and in most vehicles, that comes at a significant price increase.

New model-year 2018 vehicles to earn the plus designation include the BMW 5 Series; Genesis G80 and G90; Hyundai Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport; Kia Forte sedan and Soul; Lincoln Continental; Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan and GLC; Subaru Impreza, WRX, Legacy and Outback; and Toyota Camry. Check out the full list of models that qualify.

The IIHS is also raising it's standards for headlights.

Automakers have pledged to make autobrake standard on virtually all passenger vehicles by 2022, but for now the technology remains mostly optional, especially on nonluxury brands.
