US issues travel warning for Mexican resort town

Government personnel have been told to stay out of those neighborhoods.

The move comes after the February 21 explosion on the ferry that links Playa del Carmen with the town of Cozumel.

The state department didn't specifically say what this threat was about but did say it's separate from last month's explosion on a tourist ferry that runs between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel.

Millne says although some are considering backing out of travel plans, three other families booked flights to Mexico through his travel agency Friday morning. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Playa del Carmen is a popular destination for American college students traveling for spring break, which many universities observe in March. Two weeks before that incident, an explosion on another ferry left 26 people hurt.

"There are American victims, but they tend to be bystanders, people at the wrong place at the wrong time", he says.

The new warning narrows the threat to five neighborhoods of Playa del Carmen that USA government personnel are prohibited from visiting: Centro, Calica, Gonzalo Guerrero, Quintas del Carmen and Villas del Carmen.

The embassy said it had "received information about a security threat" on Wednesday.

Olson says 2017 was Mexico's deadliest year on record with almost 30,000 murders.

USA government employees are not allowed to travel between cities after dark in many parts of Mexico. Americans visiting other parts of the country - including Quintana Roo, where Playa del Carmen is located - are only urged to use "increased caution".

Aside from Playa Del Carmen, the U.S. State Department has warned travelers to avoid five Mexican states due to crime.

They are asking people to check travel.state.gov before heading out of the country. It tells "CBS This Morning" that the US security alert implies "safety issues without any basis in fact".
