'It's absolute madness' - Joey Barton reacts to Jamie Carragher spitting scandal

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has apologised after a video emerged showing him spitting out of his auto window at a 14-year-old girl and her father.

The incident followed Saturday's lunchtime match at Old Trafford and was caught on mobile phone and obtained by the Daily Mirror, which splashed with the story on its front page this morning.

The former defender was filmed spitting from the driver's seat of his vehicle in response to a United fan goading him over the match's 2-1 outcome.

The father then repeatedly mentions the score, to which he responds "all right", before then spitting in the direction of the vehicle.

The fan continued his banter and as soon as Carragher lost his cool, he spat at the girl who was sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle.

"Totally out of order & I've apologised personally to all the family this evening". While he said that he was goaded three or four times while driving on the motorway, he said there were "no excuses" for his behaviour. I thought, "Why has he done that".

A male voice can be heard saying "unlucky Jamie lad, 2-1!" before Carragher spits.

Byrne and Davidson's report supplied criticism from the teenager's mother, who said she was "extremely angry and disappointed" with the 40-year-old.

She responded: "OK, thanks for apologising". I don't get why he doesn't just, if he's that annoyed, just keep his window up or wind it down and tell him to mind his own business.

The former Liverpool star now works as a pundit for Sky Sports and is due to appear on tonight's Monday Night Football alongside Gary Neville and Brendan Rodgers.
