Newcastle star Jamaal Lascelles sends warning to relegation rivals Southampton

Kenedy scored twice in Saturday's 3-0 win over Southampton. Shelvey got his second assist of the game as he laid the ball on a plate for Ritchie on the edge of the box.

Kenedy opened the scoring with just 63 seconds on the clock after chesting down a ball from Jonjo Shelvey and beating Alex McCarthy with a shot on the turn.

A minute later, the Magpies doubled their lead.

The Spaniard carried the ball nearly 75 yards and then slipped in Gayle, who, after a busting a gut to get up there, passed across to Kenedy to slide into the empty net.

With the home crowd behind them this weekend, the Geordies 12th man could help make the difference which would leave Pellegrino under real pressure for the Saints final run-in.

Mauricio Pellegrino. Southampton have been on a particularly poor run of form under Pellegrino, and three points against a relegation rival would go some way to alleviating concerns that the Saints could be heading to the Championship.

Newcastle - who have a 21-day break between fixtures - are now five points clear of the relegation zone.

Benitez faced criticism for his tactics at Liverpool last weekend but the Spaniard deserves the credit for Newcastle's well-crafted victory here.

On the other side of the coin, Southampton are not looking good either.

By contrast Southampton remain firmly in the mire and their display will raise further concerns as to whether Pellegrino is the right man to keep them up. Should the board stick or twist?

Shane Long and Josh Sims came on for Southampton for the second half but the changes had little impact on the pattern of play as Newcastle continued to dominate.

No buys allowed in January 2017 and January 2018, whilst Summer 2017 saw Rafa forced to shop in the bargain basement, with gambles on the likes of Manquillo, Joselu and Atsu, around the £5m mark. Kenedy with the goal! The ideal start for Newcastle. Goals: Kenedy 2, 29, Ritchie 57. Watch Newcastle vs. Southampton to find out. Cedric Soares should start at right-back while Ryan Bertrand will keep his place as a left-back. Shelvey is the architect once more.

"It's the challenge for him to be ready for the next team (match), or whatever, but we are happy to see him here and playing well for us". Southampton are in BIG trouble. "Listen if he can get Newcastle going it's a top, top football club".
