Hearthstone: The Witchwood Expansion Announced, Introducing New Monster Hunt Mode

Blizzard is adding 135 new cards to the game and some new card modifiers to shake up the meta.

"Dark magic has twisted the creatures of the forest and set them loose upon the Gilnean capital in Azeroth, but King Genn Greymane and his lycanthropic subjects won't make for easy prey", Blizzard said in an announcement. The Witchwood will bring Echo cards, plenty of Worgen, and a new Monster Hunt mode.

Some players may be initially disappointed by the straightforwardness of the two new keywords, but it's this relative simplicity that will allow the Hearthstone team to get creative with how these new abilities are applied. These ghastly copies can be played again and again (as long as the player has enough mana!) before disappearing at the end of the turn.

Rush, meanwhile, acts like Charge - except minions labelled with it can attack only minions (and not heroes) on entering the battlefield.

A new free Monster Hunt single player mode, simiar to Kobolds & Catacombs' Dungeon Run, which will challenge players to eight continuous hard battles, leading into a big boss fight. They'll have to survive eight increasingly hard brawls in order to face the boss fight that waits for them in the heart of the wood. The expansion is available for pre-purchase now, and those who take part will earn 20 packs, as well as an "In a Dark Wood" card. The new expansion is set to be released sometime in April next month, with spoilers beginning on 26 March. Clever plays can find ways around the Battlecry, though, so making a new keyword like Rush should allow the card designers some more flexibility.

With hundreds of cards to choose from, featuring a wide range of colorful Warcraft spells, weapons, and characters, players will have limitless possibilities for developing and fine-tuning their deck-building strategies.

The Witchwood expansion is now available for pre-purchase.

Genn Greymane: If your deck has only even-cost cards at the start of the game, your starting Hero Power costs one mana. However, while Dungeon Runs had you playing as Hearthstone's 9 established classes, Monster Hunt has you picking one of four new classes made just for this mode.

A trio of Hearthstone developers went into the forest to discover the secrets of The Witchwood, the new expansion for Hearthstone.
