Lok Sabha bypolls: Gorakhpur records 43 percent turnout, Phulpur 37 percent

Phulpur/Gorakhpur: As the Samajwadi Party gears to take on the BJP in Sunday's parliamentary by-elections in Gorakhpur and Phulpur, it has found the ideal answer to its rival's RSS campaign machinery - but from an unexpected quarter. The Election Commission has chose to use EVMs and VVPATs in the bye-elections in all the polling stations. The Congress has nominated Sureetha Kareem for Gorakhpur and Manish Mishra for Phulpur Lok Sabha seat.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath cast his vote and flashed a victory sign after emerging out of a polling centre in Gorakhpur. The bye-elections in Phulpur were necessitated after Maurya vacated the constituency following his election to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council.

Lucknow/Patna: The ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) is anxious due to low voter turnout in Gorakhpur and Phulpur parliamentary seats where by-polls were held Sunday and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had vowed to win the two seats by more than its 2014 margin.

Ten candidates are in the fray from Gorakhpur, while 22 candidates are contesting from Phulpur. Prior to Adityanath, the seat was represented in parliament by his mentor Yogi Avaidyanath thrice. "There would be no vote transfer of BSP to SP candidates as claimed by the parties and they are just giving statements to confuse the voters. We expect two kinds of voters to reach the polling booths in large numbers: Mayawati's supporters and those fed up with the BJP's anti-poor actions", Kharwar said.

Live updates of Gorakhpur and Phulpur bypoll Loksabha election, are here. He said that 2019 it would be a spectacular success for the BJP and the party will win both by polls comfortably.

Results for all the seats will be declared on March 14.

The by-election in Phulpur will be a test of work the BJP-led Central and state governments have done -UP Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya, who won the seat for the first time for BJP in 2014 in what is otherwise held as a Congress bastion, focused all his campaigning there.

By 1pm, polling percentages in Phulpur and Gorakhpur touched 19.2 and 30.2 percent, respectively.

There are 19.49 lakh eligible voters, including over 8 lakh women. As many as 4,728 voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) machines are being used in the bypoll and provisions for webcasting from 95 critical booths have been made.
