"This is what we train for".

"That's what we're talking about right now across the country", Cameron added.

"Please pray for us".

The deputy has been with the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office for six years, after having previously served four years as a correctional officer. Two students at a high school in the state of Maryland were shot. "But we don't have action", said the No. 2 U.S. House Democrat, Steny Hoyer, who represents the area in Congress.

Emma Gonzalez, a Stoneman Douglas student, tweeted her support Tuesday for her peers at Great Mills. The 16-year-old girl was stabilized and transferred to University of Maryland Prince George's Hospital Center, where she remains in critical condition. Rollins fired his gun nearly simultaneously.

The St. Mary's County Public Schools said the situation was "contained" after the shooting at Great Mills High School, which has about 1,600 students and is near the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, about 65 miles (104 kilometers) southeast of Washington. A 14-year-old boy was also wounded in the incident.

The sheriff announced at the press conference that the gunman died about two hours after shooting.

"That's a potential", Cameron replied, declining to speculate on a possible motive for the shooting.

A student who said his name was Jonathan Freese said in a telephone interview on CNN that he had been on lockdown with classmates for almost an hour, but he did not hear gunshots himself.

Sheriff Tim Cameron said Tuesday that the investigation would include searching a auto and a home, interviewing witnesses, reviewing security camera footage, combing through social media and tracing the ownership of the gun used by Rollins.

The deputy was not injured.

A shooting at a Maryland high school Tuesday morning injured three people, including the shooter, a sheriff's spokeswoman said.

He told reporters Gaskill's quick actions undoubtedly saved lives and prevented another massacre from unfolding. Cameron said there weren't any immediately obvious warning signs on social media before the shooting, but said investigators still needed to take a deeper look. A gun was taken to school, and discharged, and [in this case] somebody died and two people were wounded.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said it appears the shooting was handled "exactly the way it should have been handled". "... It's devastating my heart is broken, but thank God (my daughter) was not there".

"Well, most of us in the library, we were very calm". "We had several first-hand witnesses to this incident".

They were being treated in Maryland hospitals.

Numerous students at Great Falls praised their teachers, and said that the teachers knew exactly what to do, and kept them calm in a very tense and frightening situation.

The Great Mills shooting comes just over a month after a deadly rampage in a Florida high school. "We're looking into the cost of ballistic glass, metal detectors, more cameras and more trained officers in our schools". "We were quiet, just were on the phones, texting our parent left and right", said Matthew Lancaster.

"And they was checking every single room until we got in the cafeteria". Doctors pronounced Rollins dead at 10:41 a.m.
