Kathleen Wynne launches attack on Doug Ford a day after budget

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne speaks to media at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in Toronto on January 25, 2018. "They've created crisis in hallway health care and all they've really done is put a Band-Aid on it to try to get through another election and cling to power".

Starting in the fall of 2020, licensed child care would be free for preschoolers. In recent weeks, the Premier has said that a more comprehensive child-care program in Ontario, where residents face some of the highest child-care costs in Canada, will help close the gender wage gap as women will get more control over when they want to return to work.

It would augment the new OHIP+ pharmacare program for people under 25, but has been criticized for low annual maximum payouts of $400 for singles, $600 for couples and $700 for a family of four with two children. The funding would cover their care costs until they become eligible for full-day kindergarten.

"You can't take care of the most vulnerable people in society when you have billions of dollars in debt", Doug Ford said on Wednesday.

The Liberal government of Ontario recently announced a new controversial budget for the province.

The fiscal plan further includes a new program that helps seniors aged 75 or older offset the costs of maintaining their homes and will cost $1 billion over three years. The government says that in 2018, 8.6 million individuals would pay roughly the same tax, but 1.8 million people would pay approximately $200 more.

The Kathleen Wynne Liberals have made a decision to go big in hopes voters won't send them home in June's election.

Ontario projected that investment in capital assets will rise to C$14.2 billion in the coming fiscal year from an estimated C$10.7 billion in 2017-18.

Ontarians want an end to "this scandal-ridden government", she said, and "are exhausted of broken promises and wasteful spending".

"Making child care free for preschool children will be transformative for Ontario's families".

"While we would have appreciated a greater focus on the organizations that deliver these services, the budget does invest significant amounts in the sector that will help address a number of its challenges in serving people with disabilities and seniors", Annett said.
