"In terms of snow, we expect there will be some in parts of the United Kingdom, but it will be mainly in the high ground of Scotland and northern England".

Forecasters said: "There is a small chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel".

Thursday evening's forecast calls for a slight chance of rain showers before 7 p.m., with an equal chance of snow showers after 1 a.m. Friday.

Up to 20cm of snow fell, especially on higher ground, and there was significant drifting caused by the strong easterly wind.

The cool temperatures come after the Beast from the East saw snow batter Suffolk and Essex for nearly a week at the start of March - and despite Britain entering meteorological spring.

"At present, the extent and amounts of any snow are very uncertain and it is quite possible snow might not be too disruptive".

The alert reads: "Rain will turn to snow over higher hills during Thursday daytime and then to some lower levels during Thursday night".

There had been suggestions that another blast of similar weather from Siberia would give us a white Easter, but those predictions have since been softened.

Wednesday's high in Madison was 53, 4 degrees above normal and 23 degrees below the record high of 76 for March 28, set in 1910 and tied in 1946 and 1986.

Below-average temperatures with some frost and spatterings of rain will make way for a more settled Easter Sunday. Rapid City will see less than an inch and most locations will fall into that category.
