Scientists say they discovered a 'new organ' in the body

Not so, inning accordance with brand-new research study that recommends the human race has actually entirely ignored a whole human body organ, as well as maybe the biggest of all.

Meet your newly-discovered organ, interstitium, which was hiding in plain sight, undiscovered all these years, despite being probably one of the largest organs of the human body.

For it to become an official organ like the heart or skin, other groups would have to observe and study the interstitium and there would have to be a consensus.

He estimates that it represents 20 percent of the body's volume, while the skin accounts for 16 percent. The researchers suspect that the interstitium is a form of "shock absorber" for our organs, cushioning them from impacts and allowing them to expand and contract.

It is also now believed that these channels may spread cancer, with malignant cells floating through them directly toward the lymphatic system on what Theise called a "water slide" effect. The spaces were found all around the body's connective tissue which lines the digestive tract, lungs, urinary systems, and surrounding muscles. For them to grow in a new organ, it must be in a fertile or in a favorable condition.

The results were recently published in the Journal Scientific Reports. The interstitium is being defined as an "organ" since it has a unified structure and function. They found it exists all throughout the body, acting like a shock absorber in all places where tissues are moved or subjected to force. The presence of fluid-filled areas could make it easier for invasive tumors to travel to other parts of the body, or it may create a "highway" of fluid for cancer to use to metastasize.

They took pictures, which were shown to Neil Theisse, the author of the paper and a professor at NYU's School of Medicine, who theorizes that the interstitium's goal may have to do with the immune system, as it moves through the lymphatic system.

In this case, however, the researchers were using a new piece of equipment called Probe-based Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy (PCLE), which lets them look at internal tissues directly without cutting or damaging them. Slicing it up caused the fluid to drain, emptying the sacs and causing them to collapse, and just leaving the supporting proteins behind.

This organ might help protect the rest of our organs and tissue. It's even possible that studying these spaces could help reveal what acupuncture is or isn't doing within the body.
