Ronaldo, Griezmann On Target As Atletico Hold Real Madrid

ATLETICO MADRID remain second in La Liga after Antoine Griezmann cancelled out Cristiano Ronaldo's opener at the Bernabeu.

Nevertheless, the former Real Sociedad player has scored a league goal vs. Madrid in each of the last six seasons and on his last three visits to the Bernabeu.

It also left leaders Barcelona 11 points better off than second-placed Atletico at the top of the table with seven games to play.

Gareth Bale, Lucas Vazquez and Maro Asensio are all in line for a start, with Isco, Luka Modric and Karim Benzema all rested.

Griezmann indicated last month that he would decide on a move before the World Cup finals in Russian Federation, which start on June 14.

It was Madrid who eventually went 1-0 up thanks to star man Ronaldo who struck in the 53rd minute.

Ronaldo tested Jon Oblak from distance in the 20th minute while Varane came close to open the scoring in the 28th minute.

Atletico's clearest chance of the first period arrived on the half-hour mark when Costa broke into the Real Madrid box, but the Brazilian-born Spain global saw his low strike saved by Los Blancos stopper Keylor Navas. Ronaldo kept his place in the XI, though, and was twice denied by Oblak during the first half.

Real Madrid's French coach Zinedine Zidane (L) cheers Real Madrid's Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo as he leaves the field during the Spanish league football match between Real Madrid CF and Club Atletico de Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid on April 8, 2018.

In the 58th minute Atletico were back on level terms through Griezmann.

Atletico's response was stunning and, after Navas pawed a speculative Saul Niguez shot to safety, they ensured Madrid's lead was short-lived. At the other end, Bale headed wide from near the penalty spot and Sergio Ramos' late free kick brought an excellent stop from Oblak.

Griezmann has nine goals in his last eight Atletico outings, so expect a few more from the Frenchman if he can continue his good goalscoring form.
