20 school children feared dead as school bus falls into gorge

At least 20 children were killed and several injured after a school bus fell into a deep gorge in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district on Monday.

One surviving boy, 10-year-old Ranveer Singh, told The Hindustan Times that he heard a loud bang and the bus started rolling down the side of the gorge.

The mishap took place in the state's Kangra district in Nurpur city.

Police said the bus crashed approximately 200 feet (60 meters) off the valley before hitting the ground below. The bus belonged to Vazir Ram Singh Pathania Memorial School in Nurpur. The rescue operations were nearly over when the reports last came in.

Local villagers had begun rescue operation even before officials could reach the spot, eyewitnesses said.

"The bus rolled into a 200ft-deep gorge, killing 27 schoolchildren, two teachers and the driver", said Santosh Patial, a senior local police official.

Authorities said the number of people on the bus in total has not yet been confirmed and rescue operations are ongoing. Also, the state government has announced a relief of Rs 5 lakh per family of the deceased children. This is to show condolence to the victims of Kangra bus accident which claimed the lives of 29 people, most of whom were children. "I've ordered for magisterial probe", the Chief Minister added. The condition of other injured persons was also critical, he said.

Expressing grief over the accident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed solidarity with the parents of the dead students.
